Coordinate Metrology Certificate Program Approved by State of California

Cerritos College, Cerritos, CA, has been recognized as the first community college in California to offer a “Coordinate Metrology” certificate of achievement approved by the Chancellor’s office. The program was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the teaching staff and donations of product and curriculum support from Verisurf Software and its industry partners, Faro Technologies and API. The program is significant in that it closes the loop for students in the concept of model-based manufacturing, including design, reverse engineering, manufacturing, quality inspection and reporting. The Coordinate Metrology program is a crowning achievem...

Who’s the Keeper of GD&T Data?

GD&T is widely considered to be an essential tool for communicating design intent and ensuring parts meet the desired form, fit, function and assembly.Design engineeringArchitectural engineeringCivil engineeringElectrical engineeringIndustrial engineeringMechanical engineeringManufacturing engineeringTool engineeringQuality engineeringIn today’s highly specialized world of engineering it takes a village to develop and produce a component part, let alone a complete product. Who is responsible for Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) data? The answer depends on many variables, including the type of part or product being produced, production methods, ...

Quality Inspection and the CAD Connection

Printed courtesy of Advanced Manufacturing.org  Copyright © 2016 by SME MODERN MANUFACTURING PROCESSES, SOLUTIONS & STRATEGIESModern manufacturing is rapidly adopting model-based definition (MBD).  When employing an MBD strategy, the CAD model becomes more than the nominal to which all parts are measured and inspected against.   MBD keeps the all-important digital thread intact - from design to manufacturing to inspection and quality reporting. Everything that defines the part exists in a single digital archive, including how to manufacture and inspect the part. Comprehensive deployment of MBD in manufacturing can go far beyond this to complete Pr...

3-D Model-Based GD&T for Inspection

Printed courtesy of Quality Magazine   Copyright ©2015. All Rights Reserved BNP Media The central concept behind model-based definition (MBD) is that the digital model contains all of the detailed information necessary for all aspects of the product life cycle. This includes everything from design to manufacturing, in particular, GD&T data. When the digital model is the authority it removes ambiguity, conflict and doubt that arises when drawings and models co-exist. When the 3-D model is the authority, MBD eliminates errors that result from referencing incorrect sources and makes processes more efficient. There is a common misconception that MBD is synon...
