Scan-to-CAD is a process that has seen exponential growth both in importance and impact across just about all types of industry in the latest decade or two. 

It pays to recognize the importance software plays in turning scanned pointcloud or mesh data into a CAD (computer-aided design) model that then makes it useful for manufacturing the scanned part, designing the components with which it interfaces, capturing the as-built for further engineering and/or collaboration, and probably additional applications, some yet to be discovered.

The Scan-to-Cad Process

Scan-to-CAD may appear simple and straightforward in a tradeshow demo, however, to do it well and cost-effectively successful implementation warrants a few thoughtful steps:

  • The right scanner – scan technology that works for the size, resolution and accuracy required to meet your needs
  • The right software – modern scanners acquire a lot of data really fast, something that provides good detail of the workpiece and allows the user to cover a lot of ground quickly without leaving voids – but without the right software to manage the dataset it will lead to wasted time and frustration plodding through the muck towards a finished, useful product
  • The right expert consultation – guidance and implementation support – more than likely a really productive solution goes beyond demo, equipment purchase, and basic training
  • The right skills – this is a job best assigned to engineers with CAD training and experience, generally speaking, Engineering will prove the right fit for reverse engineering and the QA or metrology department has the best resources for inspection
