Model Based Definition (MBD) for Measurement Metrology Introduced by Verisurf at Westec

Verisurf continues to position its software at the forefront of modern measurement technology with its new product, Verisurf MBD.   The innovation, which is being employed by users of coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) and portable devices such as articulating arms and laser trackers (PCMMs), will be highlighted at Westec 2006 along with the company’s other industry leading products.

While MBD has long been a focus in product design, until now it has had little presence in downstream processes such as quality control.  Manufacturers have been moving steadily towards a preference for MBD as they see the numerous benefits it can bring to their enterprise.  Companies have come to rely upon computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM).  Many are on their way to leaving old-school techniques such as blueprints and manual processes far behind.  From a cost standpoint, MBD offers the potential for abundant efficiencies, from a technical perspective, it helps prevent error and ambiguities caused by defining the product by numerous data sources.  In the current day where global collaboration is the norm, at least some level of MBD has become essential.  Despite all the reasons to fully embrace the concept it has been difficult for industry to complete the process throughout the product lifecycle model.  Now Verisurf MBD provides the solution for the last piece of the puzzle.

Verisurf MBD allows users to set unique, individual IDs, tolerances, and GD&T (geometric dimensioning & tolerancing) in the model for each CAD entity (for example, surfaces, holes, etc.).  Users of measuring devices such as stationary CMMs as well as portable devices from OEMs such as Faro, Romer, and Leica can now import CAD models from any platform including Catia, Unigraphics, Pro-E, Solidworks and Autodesk and set unique MBD constraints in Verisurf.  As inspection is done using Verisurf on the device, the user has live interactive use of the model’s GD&T.  Unique GD&T including Catia V5’s FT&A is used in Verisurf’s live inspection module, “Build - the Virtual Gage”.  It is also used actively in the Analysis module for comparing the CAD model to part data.  Finally, Verisurf’s extensive reporting capabilities makes use of the MBD data without requiring manual inputs from the user.

Verisurf Software, Inc. is a privately held software development company based in Anaheim California.  The company produces products that are pioneering the field of measurement metrology, with solutions in computer-aided inspection, manufacturing assembly, and reverse engineering.  Verisurf’s proven technology is relied upon at leading aerospace, automotive and industrial manufacturers and their suppliers.  The software is sold and supported by original equipment manufacturers and resellers around the world.
